The Finke Desert Race has earned its reputation as Australia’s toughest off-road motorcycle event for good reason. Stretching between Alice Springs and Aputula, the race is less a traditional competition and more a brutal endurance battle across raw desert terrain. Riders spend hours pinned at high speed through endless whoops, soft sand, deep ruts and jagged rock sections, often with visibility reduced to almost nothing by thick dust hanging in the air. With bikes regularly reaching speeds above 170km/h, the race demands complete commitment from both the rider and the machine, while fatigue and unpredictable terrain punish even the smallest mistakes. It is a race unlike any other, and one that cannot truly be prepared for anywhere except the Finke track itself.
Understanding those demands, the off-road Joe Rascal Racing team recently travelled to Finke for an intensive testing program involving rider Callum Norton, mechanic Scott Watts and team principal Brett Metcalfe. Known throughout the sport as Metty, the former American Supercross and Motocross racer has built a career around high-level performance and rider development. After years competing against the best riders in the world, he now brings that same attention to detail into building competitive off-road race programs with Joe Rascal.
For the team, the purpose of testing was clear from the outset: create a motorcycle package capable of surviving Finke while allowing Callum to ride confidently at race pace. According to Metty, reliability and rider comfort were at the centre of every decision made throughout the sessions. While the bike already showed impressive power and agility in the desert, the focus quickly shifted toward improving chassis balance, suspension performance and overall stability at high speed.
As testing progressed, refinements to the setup transformed the bike’s behaviour through rougher sections of the course. Greater stability allowed Callum to attack faster terrain with more confidence, reducing hesitation in areas where even a slight lift of the throttle can cost valuable time. Rider feedback became a major part of the process, with Metty highlighting Callum’s strong technical understanding and ability to immediately identify how the bike reacted to setup changes. That communication allowed the crew to move efficiently through adjustments while building a clear direction for race setup.
Metty believes that level of communication is one of the defining factors behind successful race teams. At Finke, where conditions change rapidly and mistakes are heavily punished, the way information is shared between rider, mechanic and management can shape the outcome of an entire campaign. Even small misunderstandings can send development in the wrong direction, making trust and clarity essential across the whole operation.
The race itself presents challenges that extend far beyond machinery. Riders must maintain concentration for hours while absorbing relentless impacts from the terrain, all while operating at extreme speed in punishing desert conditions. Metty described Finke as one of the most mentally demanding events in motorsport, requiring competitors to remain calm internally while riding with complete aggression externally. In his view, the riders who succeed are not simply the fastest, but the ones capable of staying composed and focused despite the chaos around them.
For Joe Rascal Racing, the significance of the testing sessions were amplified by the fact the bike entered the desert as a relative unknown. The team was effectively learning its behaviour, durability and setup direction in real time while preparing for one of the hardest races in the country. Despite the challenge, confidence continued to grow as valuable data was collected and improvements became more consistent throughout the sessions.
Experience within the team has also played a major role heading into race week. Callum’s race craft, combined with the knowledge of Scott Watts and the wider crew, has helped establish a structured approach to both preparation and race management. Metty believes that combination of technical understanding, physical endurance and mental composure is ultimately what separates competitive riders from the rest of the field at Finke.
This year’s campaign marks an important step for Joe Rascal Racing as the organisation launches its off-road program at Australia’s premier desert event. More than just a debut appearance, it represents a statement of intent from a team determined to compete at the highest level of the sport.
For Metty, Callum’s development throughout the testing process has been one of the biggest positives. With increasing confidence, growing experience and natural speed beginning to align, he believes Callum is evolving into exactly what the Finke Desert Race requires, tough, composed and Joe Rascal fast.
